Craig Bates/ The Furry & The Feathered

Craig Bates is an artist specializing in analogue photography. Based in Nottingham, UK, Craig's work explores the quiet moments and unseen details of everyday life, often turning ordinary subjects into abstract, contemplative images. His current practice centers around themes of stillness and the passage of time, with a particular fondness for animal portraiture and its ability to capture moments of connection.

Artist StatementIn "Cat Parts," I use heavily underexposed 35mm film, acting as a foil for the perfection of my subject and transforming close-ups of a domestic British Shorthair into abstract, tactile portraits. The grainy texture of the film contrasts with the softness of the fur, while the tight framing isolates elements of the cat’s body, inviting viewers to engage with familiar forms in unfamiliar ways. My intention is to evoke a sense of intimacy, where the viewer can almost feel the warmth of the fur and the quiet stillness of the animal, blurring the boundary between abstraction and portraiture.
