Ellis Kay Morgan/ The Furry & The Feathered

I am a socially engaged arts practitioner and trainee art therapist based in Derby. Textile processes are integral to my practice, offering a rich nonverbal language to convey ideas of mending, reclamation and reintegration.Textiles are an extension of our bodies and an essential part of human life. Rich in material history, the story of the body is embedded in the weave of the cloth. Using reclaimed fabric, I explore notions of class, gender and social stratification, stitching together scraps and fragments to re-claim and reconstruct that which has been discarded.

As a underclass woman, with lived experience of homelessness and exploitation, my work is both a personal and political act. In each piece stitched together I reclaim a part of the self, whilst challenging power structures that devalue and dehumanise people based on their social identities. I intend my work to advocate for a world where no human being is seen as disposable.
