Mary Whitehouse/ Art & Activism

In her first career as a physics educator, Mary aimed to raise awareness of the relationship between science and society, emphasizing the importance of all citizens understanding how science works. During this time, arts and crafts took a backseat, though she always had a creative project in hand. After retiring in 2017, she took a course in patchwork and quilting at a local sewing school in York, home to the Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles. This experience introduced her to many talented quilters and textile artists who inspired her to explore techniques beyond traditional patchwork and quilting.

In 2020, she began studying for a Foundation Degree in Textiles Practice at Bradford School of Art, graduating with Distinction in June 2024. She returned to the college in September 2024 to pursue a BA (Hons), with plans to graduate in the summer of 2026.
